OLD TESTAMENT III.

In Search of the Mysteries of Eternity

A painting cycle by Tamás Náray - 2026

Following several decades devoted to great historical and mythological cycles, Náray once again leads the viewer into the world of the Old Testament, now through the eyes of a more mature painter, shaped by another era and another human experience.

The artist’s painting simultaneously embodies the mastery of classical craft, the elemental power of color, and the freedom of the symbols that have become the hallmark of his abstraction, while the recurring presence of gold evokes a realm beyond transience.

Old Testament III constitutes a synthesis of the artist’s ongoing ontological and metaphysical investigations. The cycle is organically connected to an abstract reinterpretation of theological iconography.

  • Genesis as a pictorial act: The works in the series capture the cosmic and spiritual moment of Creation. Within the compositions, the dichotomy of chaos and order, darkness and light, is held in tension. Explosive textures and structured fields of color appearing across the picture surface model Creation itself as a pictorial act.
  • Gold as a metaphysical code: In Náray’s art, gold functions as a sacred signifier. Evoking the traditions of Byzantine icon painting and medieval art, gold symbolises the ineffable divine Light and the immanent presence of transcendence through the visual language of modernity.
  • Iconography without narrative: Náray’s achievement in his Old Testament cycles lies in his ability to convey the moral and dramatic weight of the biblical texts without becoming illustrative. The paintings do not tell stories; rather, they communicate affective and intellectual states - faith, promise, prophecy and destiny - to the viewer as pure visual energies. These energies permeate the viewer standing before the works.

With Old Testament III, Náray Tamás has definitively positioned himself at the forefront of contemporary sacred abstraction. His work demonstrates that non-figurative painting, even in the twenty-first century, remains capable of articulating the deepest metaphysical questions with validity and monumental force.
